Stephan Raes

Stephan Raes started working as Economic Minister at the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C., in August 2008. Before he held several positions at the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, most recently as acting director Strategy, Research and International Affairs at the Directorate General for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. As acting director Stephan Raes was responsible for international innovation policy (EU 6th Framework Program, Eureka), as well as medium term policy planning and evaluation in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. Before, he worked on general micro and macro economic policy making, as well as in the field of trade policy and promotion.

Stephan Raes holds a phd in International Relations (University of Amsterdam), and a master degree in European Studies. His publications focus on international trade policy, immigrant entrepreneurship, the textile and clothing industries and productivity. From 1990 until 1999 Stephan Raes worked as a lecturer at Nijmegen University in the Netherlands, where he taught Political Economy of the Middle East and the Mediterranean Region.

Stephan Raes is married and has two children. His wife, Aileen Lonie, is from Dundee, Scotland, and worked as an IT programmer for mainframe financial systems, most recently for Fortis Bank in the Netherlands.
