The UK and the US: Partners in Meeting the Challenges and Opportunities of Globalisation

Dominic Martin, Counsellor at the British Embassy Washington, D.C., Political and Public Affairs

Governments across the world are finding that the dividing line between domestic and international policy is increasingly blurred. Many of the problems that we face today—from protecting the homeland against international terrorism to preserving our environment for future generations—can only be solved if nations around the world work together. But events have shown that achieving such global co-operation is not easy.

History suggests that the best chance of finding international solutions to international problems occurs when the United States and Europe work closely together. Despite some well-publicised differences, transatlantic collaboration today operates at a peak of intensity rarely seen before. But public scepticism about the value of the transatlantic relationship is high.

Britain has long been one of the United States' closest partners in Europe. A strong US/UK partnership lies at the heart of the international response to many of today's challenges. What is the British perspective on globalisation?

Mr. Martin will look at a number of recent case studies—political, economic, and security—where transatlantic co-operation has been put to the test. What are the lessons that governments need to learn? How can governments better communicate their goals to the public?

What will be the key challenges for the 21st century? How can we strengthen the relationship between the US and the European Union—and ensure that the UK/US partnership remains as strong in the future as it has been in the past?
