Prospects and Challenges of North American Integration
Antonio Ortiz-Mena, Head of Section, Economic Affairs, Mexican Embassy, Washington, D.C.
Antonio Ortiz-Mena will discuss issues related to the North American economic integration as well as the U.S.-Mexico relationship.
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), negotiated between the U.S. and Mexico in 1993, is a free trade experiment that has succeeded on many levels yet still faces major challenges.
Major changes, agreed by Mexico, include government transparency, equal treatment for domestic and foreign investors and international mediation of labor and other disputes. Over the past 15 years, these have supported major growth in its industries and exports, accompanied by substantial raises in worker wages.
President Felipe Calderon's administration is working with Washington to address significant challenges which remain.
Dr. Ortiz-Mena will provide his government's assessment of what remains to be accomplished by both countries. Both want a globally competitive Mexico with on-going technological advances in its industries and increases in jobs and workers' wages. Key essentials are significant advances in education, energy reform and agriculture. Other concerns shared across our borders include reduction of illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Resolving these are of equal importance to Mexico and to the U.S. and to further development of NAFTA as a model for free trade.
