Globalizing India: Opportunities & Challenges
Manoj Joshi, Counsellor, Economic Affairs, Embassy of India, Washington, D.C.
India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. India started liberalizing its economy in 1991. Within a period of 16 years, India has become a part of globalized world with increasing global trade, investments, and rising domestic demand with a strong middle class. This growth in India provides significant opportunities for global companies in the services sector, manufacturing, research and the growing Indian marketplace. Manoj Joshi will discuss economic liberalization in India and opportunities it provides to global industry.
India has large diversities in religion, culture, language and yet one billion people live together in harmony in the world’s largest democracy. In today’s world of rising intolerance, India's religious and cultural tolerance provides a model.
At the same time, Mr. Joshi will address the biggest challenge facing India today: to have growth which is inclusive. Accomplishing this requires bringing its people out of poverty, addressing challenges in infrastructure and maintaining rapid growth.
India and the US, the world’s largest and oldest democracies, today share their best-ever relationship. Mr. Joshi will discuss the growing India-US relationship and its benefits to both. The two countries are working together in their shared goal of global peace and harmony, increasing strategic ties and growing trade and investment relationship.
