Similarities and Differences in U.S. and European Approaches
to International Challenges
Jesper Møller Sørensen, Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs, Embassy of Denmark, Washington, D.C.
Jesper Møller Sørensen will discuss some of the most important international issues that European diplomats in Washington face. What are the differences and similarities between U.S. and European approaches to confronting these challenges?
Mr. Sørensen will assert that the U.S. and Europe often agree on the goals — for instance, solving the Israeli-Palestinian issue in the Middle East — but that we do not always agree on the means. We share the same values of freedom, democracy, human rights and stability. However, Europeans are often accused in Washington of not taking responsibility.
In European capitals, Americans are accused of applying hard power and disregarding soft power. Afghanistan is an example. Mr. Sørensen will explore these different approaches.
Transatlantic relations contain many diverse forms of cooperation. As a small state, Denmark favors multilateral frameworks, international institutions, and international binding conventions. A widespread perception in Europe holds that the U.S. would rather act independently of such institutional constraints.
Yet Europe is not just “Europe”. Denmark and the UK are part of the coalition in Iraq. Belgium and France are not. Many differences in approach and outlook exist among the European countries.
Finally, Mr. Sørensen is looking forward to a lively discussion about the background for and the consequences of the cartoon crisis that placed Denmark on the front page of international newspapers around the world.
