ACWA FUNDING

GAR Challenge Grant Met

We at the Akron Council on World Affairs (ACWA) want to express our gratitude to foundations in our community and to members and friends who support our Global Scholars program for public high school students.

Most recently, the GAR Foundation provided ACWA’s first challenge grant, in the amount of $2500, in addition to providing $7500 outright. Within just weeks, 30 households provided the matching funds necessary.

We acknowledge members and friends who contributed.

Additional support for Global Scholars has been provided by the Akron Community Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and OMNOVA Solutions Foundation.

Global Scholars is recognized by the Akron Public Schools as a significant extracurricular program. During the year, students and their teachers/advisors participate in some 1400 hours of programs. Since ACWA originated Global Scholars, more than 340 students have participated.

Students attend special orientation sessions on global trade and related issues and attend briefing sessions with foreign diplomats from their countries’ embassies in Washington, DC.
